Closed system? Doesn't there need to be some opening for fresh air?

And when you say tort level do you mean mid shell?
I sit my gauges as close to substrate as possible. My juvenile torts dont seem to bother with them.

Where is "here"? When I place an Amazon order I generally get it within a couple days.

Well I couldn't find the substrate, either lighting or thermostat her locally.
What's the difference between the black and white che? And what wattage uvb tube light would work for a 4 foot long tank?

My uvb is 18w. There's no difference between black or white CHE that I know of.

Mine is a komodo. There is probably plenty of other manufacturers though. Exo Terra I believe is a good one. Also you can get 5.0 uvb and 10.0 uvb grades. The 10.0 gives off more you uvb, I use 10.0 grade because my juveniles don't get outside a lot in our climate.
I forgot to mention, that a CHE needs to be screwed into a ceramic holder, not the plastic type. They get hotter than standard bulbs. Most domes have the ceramic holders as standard.
When you have it all sorted out it gets easier and more enjoyable.

Good to know thanx! I just found a good deal on a double light controller. If I'm using 2 lights should I get 2 10w? At 10.0 grade uvb?

You need to be careful not to make it too bright. Redfoot tortoises don't like it extremely bright. I would stick with one fluorescent.

If you make it too bright s/he may hide away a lot for security.

Do you think an aquarium temperature controller would work the same in a terrarium? It measures temperature and signals the power to the heater/light until designated temp is reached.

Alright. What if I use slightly higher wattage and hang it right from the top? 12" above substrate approx?
