I've found it takes a good couple seasons for transplanted bamboo to go crazy. Well folks yep. It's season two from these guys. Have a lot of new shoots coming up. Just love it. Gonna be a jungle in upcoming years. Too bad I have plans of relocating in the next 5 years. Lol

I have some nice sized shoots coming up from the wooded lot next door! If only I can convince my hubby to stop breaking them down every time he sees one!! I LOVE bamboo. I know it can get out of control, but the shoots are already on our property.....why not enjoy some of them??? I offered at one time to dig a barrier so they would stay near the fence, but now I would be afraid to do that because that's where my new tort enclosures are going, and I would be too afraid they would dig and get hurt on the piece of metal I was planning on using. I will have to research and see what else I could use that would be safe.

Me too. Bamboo rocks. I like that it's invasive and grows crazy. The torts love it too.

You don't relocate bamboo you just spread it ( please I'm not saying it don't look good ) I'm just saying you cannt dig up every razone , so when you digg it up to move it , in a few weeks it will start growing again in the old spot . It will become a real problem .

Is that the bamboo sold as "lucky" bamboo? I'm growing some and it doesn't get very tall before it goes sideways from it's own weight.

No, lucky bamboo is decorative indoor plant. They are very pretty!

I think there are thousands of varieties of bamboo but nurseries sell it in 5-15 gallon containers.

Nope. This is golden bamboo. The lucky bamboo won't take off as much. Most the times it's sold in tiny house plant thingies. I had some giant black bamboo but that species doesn't do well in freezes.

Oh yes I'm quite aware. I started one plant about 17 years ago at my brothers house, it's now a forest of over thousands of plants. It's spectacular.

You can't relocate it, but you CAN control where it goes (mostly) if you dig a 24" deep trench and put something in it that the roots can't penetrate. That will keep it contained and keep it from taking over. Mine is coming from the next door neighbors......I have no idea why they planted them in the woods?!?! They don't get any sun in the woods, but the ones that are popping up in my yard will get a LOT more sun, so I am interested in seeing how it grows.

Yes indeed. Will be bigger(much bigger) and better. Will also accommodate full on public viewing and operating hours too. So a better thing for sure.

My mother planted all sorts of exotic bamboo species along a canal bank in our yard….Blue, red, all sorts of weird and beautiful colors. That was two years ago. The blue is now a thick cluster over 20 feet tall. Love it :)

I just planted some Buddha bamboo in my yard. I built a 4 x 4 raised bed that is 18 inches high and I am hoping it will be contained in there.

Nice post Kelly .....and your right ...that is Golden Bamboo aka " Golden Goddess. Very easy to grow and is a "runner" bamboo (New shoots derive from the rhizome under the ground- which has it's pro's and con's) I have belonged to the Bamboo Society out here in CA for over 25 years now, and have a varied collection or bamboos’ myself. There is a place in Encinitas CA. called Quail Gardens (A Botanical Garden For the Public) who has an awesome collection with several different rare species. Once a year they have an auction for “hard to find specimens” a great chance to score some out of the norm.
Here are just a few I have now....
Phyllostachys vivax 'aureocaulis' - this is a rare giant bamboo. Canes are a pale yellow with random stripes

Indocalamus latifolius 'solidus'- a rare little bamboo that has almost solid canes. It also has large leaves, straight canes, and is very shade tolerant

Phyllostachys nigra 'black' - *interesting note- canes emerge green and turn black with sunlight exposure. A beautiful and unique plant

Phyllostachys viridis 'robert young' - the canes of this bamboo are a buttery yellow with random green stripes. The canes also have a gentle bend which gives them a graceful appearance. This is a very unique and attractive bamboo.

Bambusa multiplex 'alphonse karr': a full sun bamboo with a mostly vertical growth habit. Canes are gold colored with random vertical green stripes and when first sprouting main canes they have a pink hue to it.

Otatea acuminata aztecorum “Mexican Weeping Bamboo”
A fabulous and unique looking plant that thrives in the sun. Tolerates both sea spray and periods of dryness. The finely divided foliage is light green.

Heck ....I even have a bamboo Print in My Office ...;)

and for a helpful hint for everyone .....The plant seen for sale labeled "Heavenly Bamboo"

This plant belongs to the Barberry family, and commonly called heavenly bamboo because its erect, cane-like stems and compound leaves resemble bamboo. Tiny whitish flowers with yellow anthers appear in late spring in loose, erect, terminal clusters. Flowers are followed by sprays of spherical, two-seeded, red berries which persist from fall to spring, providing winter interest.
**TOXIC** - cyanide and other alkaloids contained in the berries that produce highly toxic hydrogen cyanide, which is extremely poisonous to all animals. DO not Use it in Your Enclosure!
Genus name is the Latinized firm of the Japanese name of this plant Nanten.
