Hi bradtort:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

I'm sorry, but I show this to be your first post. Do you think you used to belong under a different username?

In my case, I just got to know them by experience. I can I.D. the types of turtles and tortoises that I have or that are popular in the pet trade, but when it comes to types that I don't have or have never seen in real life, I'm not good with I.D. I've been into turtles and tortoises for over 30 years, but I still have trouble identifying some species.

What would you like us to call you?

...and may we know appx. where in the world you are?

Welcome! Just experience and research for me. Lots of reptile shows when I was little helped identification methods for me. Seeing all the different kinds and then the Internet came about and just opened up to more database and research methods. I still prefer the books though.

Before the internet, yes a time like that did exist, I used to spend a lot of time in the library reading, of course I read a lot about turtles and tortoises, you just learn from experience.
