Not at all, I love this Play-by-Play! ;)

It's mesmerizing to watch babies being born, as long as I'm not the one "hatching" it!! :p

This IS exciting Terry K. ......It's the first thing I did this AM when I got up too. If this was in my house, I guess I wouldn't be sleeping at all. My son had to do a science project...make an incubator, hatch an egg....When we saw that first little crack, we never went to bed.

A better pic of the cup they are in when in the 'nursery'. Here you can see that the 'membrane' is torn. I picked it up and it was squirming..

I did remove a few small pieces of the membrane on the back side.. he looks to be very dark. We'll leave him alone until later this evening.. the papertowel was getting cool from not being in the incubator.

Until this evening...

Is there ever a time that you would consider helping him out of the egg? Or is that dangerous?

I don't know anything about birthing tortoises.

I've never birthed any, so I don't really know, but I would think that them doing it on their own time is what's best--and what mother nature intended.

Yes!!! You knew! :D

In our family, we often play NTM, or Name That Movie.

You just won a point, Yvonne! ;)

(I've also read the book at least a dozen times :p )

Back to the topic, DO you ever help? Like if it's been 48 hours or some magic number? You folks with lots of experience know the answer.

Like any phase of keeping redfoot tortoises.. ya gotta know what 'mother nature' dictates.. and respond accordingly.

So it is with incubating eggs. Sometime during the end of the hot and dry season in South America - I asked a 'friend' in Venezuela about the seasons and she said we have 2: hot and dry and hot and wet! - there are baby redfoots ready to hatch.

When it starts to rain.. they start to hatch. So we maintain the temps in the incubators and raise the humidity considerably. When/after the first pip we usually give them 2 days to do what this one is doing - which is what I meant when I said "Right on schedule". If they don't.. something usually isn't right and we go in after them. My experience is they become de-hydrated.. which is why the individual "nursery-cup". We can only do what "mother-nature" dictates and then we have to try to save the ones that might not make it in the wild otherwise.

Humidity is the magic factor...

He's stretching out.. he's getting anxious to come out -

a12310STRETCH.jpg

The blue papertowel was getting 'soaked' etc. so it was time to change to the white ones. As soon as I touched the egg he drew back in.

It won't be long now -

I've always said "Breeding and hatching redfoot tortoises brings a new meaning to PATIENCE"! We should see him shortly.. maybe by Tuesday -

Aww, Terry, give us a little break! It was just a bit of comic relief to alleviate the tension of this situation! :p

TUESDAY??!! I don't know if I can stand it...though I completely understand and support your "let Mother Nature work first" strategy. ;)
