tortoise biting and getting on ones back

hi , i have two tortoise 1 male 1 female . they are around 10 years old . over the years i often see my male tortoise getting on to my female tortoise back . what does that mean ? also , recently they have been fighting . i just witness them biting each other . what should i do ?

It should be because they are breeding, the male will get on the females back. The male usually bites, ram and butt the female, so the female will be bullied and eventually let the male mate.

First, you should separate them into their own enclosures. Tortoises should not be kept in pairs.

Next, tell us what species and show us pics of the tails and anal scutes, so that we can verify what we're dealing with here.

It should be because they are breeding, the male will get on the females back. The male usually bites, ram and butt the female, so the female will be bullied and eventually let the male mate.
wouldnt it in danger ? i was really afraid that it may danger her so i quickly seperated them ..... or should i not ...

It will most likely end up killing or hurting the female if you don't separate them . Tortoises don't like another Tortoise in their territory. Males will mate with a female to much if she can't get away from him .

That means if mixing them, we need at least a few females with a male?

thats my tortoise the one on the inside is joy ,male . the one on the outside s happy ,female .

yah ! my female tortoise didnt like it so it tried to get away but the male one always got it cornered

... i dont know i tried looking it up but i couldnt understand what does it mean ... they were bought in a market , wet market and there were lots of other baby tortoise with them . i was about 5 when my parents bought them

Looks like turtles too me. How do you know they are male and female?

are they water turtles? and yeah you should still separate them i had two african sidenecks that i had to separate because they started getting aggressive

i dont think they are water turtles ....i have never tried putting them in fully underwater though ...
