Hello Natrah - you asked about us meeting Zola - when we moved to Devon,we put up several bird feeders, and soon got some very enthusiastic visitors ! So we kept having to buy birdseed from a pet shop in a nearby town, and got friendly with the owner. One day he asked if we would like to see some baby tortoises he had just got (it had only just become legal in the UK to sell them again, after being banned for many years!) He had two old tortoises himself that had been in his family a long time. So there were 2 tiny little chaps - one, who had a shell split at the top, and the brightest most intelligent eyes ever - and who became our precious Zola. We had never even thought of having a pet of any kind, but one look at him and we were lost. The pet shop chap said we must go home and think it over, and gave us a couple of days to get some kind of enclosure ready if we did want him - then we went back, and he gave us sensible advice about looking after him and so on, before he let us take him. Our lives have never been the same since then !
One sad thing was that the other baby went to a very wealthy television personality who lived nearby (his initials were NE ) and whose family put him in a hamster cage with no light or heating - until the pet shop man (a tough ex Royal Marine) found out, and forced him to give the baby back to him -it was practically dead, and had hardly grown at all. I don't know the end of the story, as Mike's wife was very ill, and he closed the shop, but I think he was going to keep that poor baby himself and hope it would recover.
It was sunny again today, but very cold, so we didn't go far - maybe tomorrow. I hope you have a lovely meal with your friend - I went to Turkey a long time ago, and mainly remember the lovely rice pudding !
Love to you, Jacky, Angel Daisy, and all our forum friends from Angie xxxxxxxxxx

Yes, I think you've guessed ! We told Zola we wouldn't be able to give him rides in a helicopter, or gold bath taps, but we would love him very much, and would give him the best life we could - and we have done that all these years. I think he is happy and content, anyway.

Good evening everyone!

I've worked out who NE is and I feel angry that someone earning lots of money is incapable of looking after a little tortoise. This person could have built a palace for his little one but he didn't. Anyway I haven't seen his programmes for years and years. I hope Richard was okay today. My day didn't get off to a good start because I was locked in my room with a dodgy door! I was unable to teach for ninety minutes but I should be compensated. Anyway I managed to get to Rayleigh and enjoy my friend's belated 60th birthday. Angie we were in Fethiye, Turkey in 1990. Where did you go?

Goodnight everyone

Hello Natrah - it must have been horrible being locked in - was this at the place where you teach ?
We used to take Zola to see Mike at the pet shop when we got our birdfood, and he was always pleased to see how Zola was getting on. Then one time he brought in this tiny immobile scrap, and told us it was Pasty, as NE had named him - we were really shocked and upset, and it still upsets me now to think about it. The contrast with Zola, who was probably his brother, was terrible.
I went just to Istanbul in Turkey - long before I knew Richard - and my memories are mainly of wonderful architecture - and one memory of seeing a dancing bear - I hadn't realised how badly they were treated until later, but I have subscribed to an animal welfare organisation which rescues them, ever since !
It has been very cold today, with a lot of frost.
Love to you, Jacky and Angel Daisy, and to all our forum friends from Angie and Zola xxxxxxxxxxx

Dear Angie,

Yes it was in the shop and the receptionist who is usually there was very sorry that she forgot to warn me about the door. However I think really the business owners need to think about this sort of thing as well. Anyway the door is being fixed tomorrow as it had come off it's slide. I was concerned about contacting the pupils but anyway thank goodness for mobile phones. I was a bit irritated with the mother of the first pupil who wanted to carry on chatting about her daughter might take her Theory exam whilst I was trying to get out of my teaching room. Another call came through from the next pupil who was more concerned about me. I did ring the first pupil back and leave a message so I shall see what happens next week.

I hope that little tortoise was okay

I should say that I remember being locked in a bathroom with a dodgy door in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur twice within a few days. I remember thumping my brother when I got out the second time because he was laughing at me and I remember being put in my place by mum.

Hello guys,
It’s me Chef.
I hope you are all getting on well and happiness surrounds you.
We all send our love
But on a ……. 😢… kind of sad/weird note..
Gary is not feeling well at all. 🥺
He is staying in his shell a lot and only coming out to eat slightly then back in.
When he DOES come out he refuses to bring out his eye tentacles????
I have run him under warm water and put him on his heat rock (on low) but nothing seems to be working.
I tried different foods and he just won’t perk up..
I am praying it’s because of the cold 🥶 as it is 23 degrees outside but he is kept at a nice 73 (that’s all the house will allow).
Please keep fingers crossed 🤞
and prayers up for what is to come.
I hope spring will liven him up.

I am just soo sad I don’t even feel like talking..and that’s very not like me. 😞

All my best to each and every one of you and your pets and families.
I will keep you posted…

❤️🙏🤞😭

Oh Chef - I'm so very sorry about Gary, and I'm hoping that it is just because of the weather affecting him -I'm keeping my fingers crossed, like you asked, and Zola will be trying to keep his claws crossed too.
Lots and lots of love from us both xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Similar to carrot soaks for tortoises, room temperature green tea baths are usef for snails. Maybe give it a try? Make sure the water won't reach Gary's breathing vent!

Natrah I hope you are ok after that experience. It’s a bit unsettling isn’t it.
I remember finding myself locked in a toilet at work & waiting for someone to come in to help. No one did so I had to climb over the top of the cubicle into the next one. My skirt was covered in thick dust which i attempted to wipe off leaving big dark wet patches! I then proceeded back to my office desk with no one aware of what had happened. I could feel the bruises starting to appear as it was a bit of a scramble to get over the top 🤣

Good evening everyone!

I hope GGGGGAAAARRRYYYY's okay. He's one of the cutest snails that I've ever seen. The door should have been fixed today but thank goodness I'm not in that room again until Saturday so someone else can test it out. Yes I have locked out of the old flat and student accommodation as well as in the bathrooms of hotels! It's been a lovely day here with a beautiful sunset. When I was out earlier I heard Blue **** singing to each other and I think I saw a Pied Wagtail. Whilst I was having lunch at the Cliffs Pavilion I thought I could see Brent Geese bobbing up and down on the River Thames. Anyway I have been thinking of Pasty and it is beyond me how NE could treat him like that knowing how I have worried about Jacky and Daisy over the years.

Goodnight everyone

We couldn't believe how Pasty had been treated, either - I presume he only got him because baby tortoises were still rare in the UK, so he could show off a bit through having one! He said he was getting it for his children, but surely one of the really important things a child should learn would be to take care of their pets, and it was his duty to make sure they did learn ! I think he was so wealthy that spending hundreds of pounds on impulse on a tortoise was just like buying a bar of chocolate to him.
Our main robin is coming regularly to feed off Richard's hand - there is a female who is more shy, but we look forward to seeing babies eventually. One year, the postman came as Richard was feeding him, and we let him try, too -the expression on the postman's face was amazing when the robin calmly stood on his hand !
We have a lot of goldfinches comung to our feeders, and recently there were some long-tailed t*ts, which we rarely see round here usually, and unfortunately several starlings, which are greedy and pushy - we keep asking them to go back to Russia ! Also there are 2 nuthatches, and the usual bluet*ts and sparrows. We spend a lot of money on birdfood !
Lots of love from Angie and Zola xxxxxxxx
