We had some yesterday afternoon but it wasn't very much and it didn't bother Jacky!

Dear Natrah -I have ordered a buddleia plant, but I don't suppose it will be flowering this year - it should have pink, white and blue branches, and we will keep it in a large container somewhere we can see it well - and see all the butterflies when they come, we hope. It's a treat to myself for my birthday, which is quite soon.
Zola had a lovely walk on the breakwater today, and met a lot of people, including one man who was amazed at how agile he is climbing over the rocks ! He met a group of people from a residential home for those with special needs, and they were fascinated by him too. I used to teach special needs children, and Richard came to the school to play his guitar and sing to the children,(who really loved him) so he makes a point of giving any such people extra attention when out with Zola, rather than ignoring them, as many people do.
Jack reallly does know what she wants, doesn't she ! An example to us all, really!

The buddleia arrived this morning, and is in a big pot in the garden. Richard has been reading up on how to care for it -I will send photos when it has grown a bit. It looks very healthy, but not very impressive yet !

Yes I found Daisy in the middle of the Ice Plant and because it had soft succulent stems it ended up with a 'Daisy' hole for the rest of the season. Just remembered that we also had nasturtiums which were good for tortoises and caterpillars!

Dear Natrah - we went to Barnstaple today, to get some more radicchio for Zola - it was fairly hot on the way, but Zola was quite happy on my lap. He also got his afternoon stroke when we got back, of course.
He really is such a dear little chap - except when he has his "I don't know what I want but I want it NOW ! !" sort of mood, when he can get quite frantic !
I think we have got past the worst of the heat, though Monday may be pretty warm - it makes my headaches worse, unfortunatel. Still, our garden looks better every day, with the alternate sun and rain !

Been hot here again. It’s really not doing the garden much good. We have to water it every few days but rain is whats needed. Dickie came out about 11am & was back in her box by 3pm. It’s too hot for her. Pete reckons Sherman was feeling too hot as well. He was bashing about in the garden trying to get through a gap that was impossible. Then he went into his shed & bashed about in there as well. One of the staff brought him something that looked like a sweet potato & he then spent ages trying to eat it. Perhaps the heat makes them a little more aggressive.

Good morning everyone!

It's very warm here and I noticed yesterday that Southend Seafront was on ITV news and it showed the Kursaal where mum and dad used to go ballroom dancing. Jacky was out at 8.00 am having breakfast and it's first time this year that she started eating that early! I did go out to teach and then to meet my friend in Rayleigh so she had to come in but when I put her out again she started munching again. This is good to see as it shows that I have a healthy 89 year old tortoise. She does I have the same mood as Zola in that she will if she wants something now although she doesn't know what she wants. Also like Dickie, Jacky and also Daisy would be heading for the shade when it gets too hot which is why I have replied to a few threads on this forum saying that some tortoises are more used to our climate.

I have noticed aircraft flying over for an airshow in the Isle Of Wight and so far I have seen two Spitfires and an army helicopter. This afternoon I hope to see the Red Arrows who are using Southend airport as a base so I hear. I had a good day in Rayleigh yesterday but on the way back the bus went past Chalkwell Park where my brothers and I and later my nephews played as children and it was full of police cars, ambulances and an air ambulance. I was shocked to hear the news that the tree that we used to play under had fallen on to five children and that one of them, a seven year old girl, had passed away. I prayed for her family and for the recovery of the six year old girl.

She was very annoyed with me and she left a present in the soaking tub. I imagine Pets may find some work to do in Sherman's enclosure after all the bashing. Edward how is it where you are and when do you break up from uni? I am looking forward to my holiday in Oxford at the end of July. Angie are you okay in this heat?

Hello Natrah - it hasn't been all that hot here, actually - I think tomorrow may be worse for us, as Mark is coming to bring a new pump for our Stanley heater, and we will have to put the heating on to check it ! I haven't been feeling too well, actually - some sort of flu type bug,I think, and have been very shaky and dizzy - nothing serious, I'm sure. Our new buddleia plant is looking good, and is putting out new shoots, so maybe we will actually get a flower or two in the autumn!
Richard has heard a thrush singing in the evening nearby, twice - they seem fairly rare here - we had a pair years ago in Nottingham, and they became very friendly - such nice personalities. Still, we have a couple of blackbirds around - my favourites - in Nottingham we had one we called Fatdabs, who was very bossy to
me and expected me to run for the grated cheese whenever she appeared - she had a mate we called Lover Boy, who had a damaged leg, but he was devoted to her.
Zola is fine, but has had to have a quiet day, because of us being busy.

Sue our old friend on another forum has said that some Sulcata owners use splash pads designed for children but I don't know what the sanctuary would make of this. It's 27 degrees Celsius here at the moment.

Yes I’ve asked Pete what they do for Sherman bath wise but he didn't know. I should think anything that can be pierced like a small paddling pool won’t last long! I hope they do sprinkle him with a hose. He needs a shallow bath sunk into the ground, something he can wander through when he roams about.

Dear Natrah and everyone -it has been very hot here (not helped in our house by having the heating on while the plumber fixed a new pump and checked it) Richard took Zola for a walk, and there was a nice cool breeze on the breakwater. There is a man they often meet who fishes there, and today he had two crows with him -he explained that they were fairly tame and came to him often for food, and that they had recently had babies. A bit later, quite a long way from this, R and Z came across another friend sitting on a bench outside a cafe,drinking beer - he had a young crow on his arm, who was sharing the beer with him ! The little crow had presumably flown from wherever his nest was - the funny thing was that the two local men didn't know each other - however, Richard told them about their crows, so perhaps they have managed to meet up
now !

Good evening everyone!

Sitting down after a cool bath and trying to keep cool. Jacky and I developed quite an appetite with both of us going for our food. I think Sherman really needs a shallow pool or a hose down. Angie you must have been boiling with the heating on. Are you okay now? Do you have fans?

The air con in the shop did it's best but it still hot. Of course during my break I bought an ice-lolly but when I got back to the shop it had melted into it's wrapper. The pupils did well in the heat but I was concerned about one pupil (an eleven year old boy). His mother is the pushy lady who I've mentioned before anyway he was yawning and nearly fell asleep a few times and because I was concerned about the heat I offered him a drink of water after the lesson which he declined and after he left the shop I phoned his mum. She was surprised as he had never done that before and then she said that he got up at 5 am to go swimming and that after his Piano lesson he was going to athletics! I mean athletics!!!!

Anyway at the end of the phonecall she said that she would let me know when he got home. I had a message saying that he was home and that they were going to athletics!!!!!! Let's hope he gets through the day tomorrow!

Dear Natrah -you will probably remember me telling you about Zola's early life, and how we met him in a pet shop when we went to buy bird food. Well, an amazing thing happened yesterday when Richard and Zola were having their breakwater walk. A young woman with a baby in a pushchair came up, and asked to see Zola. She said her family came from Okehampton,which is 20 miles away and had a tortoise called Victor.
Richard remembered the pet shop owner had one called Victor - it was the same one! The pet shop had closed suddenly a year or so after we met Zola, and we hadn't been able to find where Mike and Linden had gone - his wife had been very seriously ill,for a long time, so we thought Linden had probably passed away, and Mike had gone to live elsewhere. However, he still lived in the area, though quite old now, and Linden had recovered, and was very well. So Richard told this woman about how we got Zola - the first baby tortoise we had ever seen ((and the best ever) and how Mike had called him Bobby Vee, after a pop star, because of the split in his shell at the back of his neck (which is still there, of course). It was an amazing coincidence, and especially because it took place almost exactly 24years ago to the day that we first met Zola, who will be 25 years old on July 8th - he was just a year old then.
I wish I had been there, to find out where they live now, as I'm sure they would be pleased to meet Zola again - Richard was so excited that he didn't think to ask ! We are forever grateful to Mike for bringing Zola into our lives.

Angie that's wonderful news about Victor and what an amazing coincidence as Victor is Zola's brother. I remember you talking about a tortoise called Pasty as well. I hope you don't mind me asking but is Pasty infact Victor every time I see NE on TV I think of him. By the way Jacky must have been pleased to see the rain as she was outside eating in it.

Hello Natrah - no, Victor is no relation to Zola - he had been in Mike's family for many years - Zola and Pasty were imported from Holland soon after it became legal to import tortoises again into this country. Victor was the family pet - Mike took us to the back of his shop to introduce us to him - Pasty was Zola's brother from Holland - and I try to avoid seeing NE on TV at any time, because I don't think I could bear to look at him, after he treated Pasty so badly. I don't know if Mike kept the poor little thing permanently, or if he even survived. I often think of him when I see our little boy enjoying life with us - and he really does enjoy his unusual life, as you know !
Tomorrow I have to go for a checkup at the doctors', and then I shall get my hearing aid in a couple of weeks - and then in August I will have a checkup at the hospital for my cataract op - and possibly the actual op soon after that ! Pretty exciting !

We had a sprinkling of rain this morning & it felt quite cool compared to the temperatures of recent days. It was lovely. Dickie didn’t come out though, she was tucked up at the back of her house until the afternoon when it started to warm up & she moved closer to her doorway but still didn’t come out! Pete decided to get her out when he got home. Think she’s being a lazy madam… she ate runner bean leaves & some cherries. She will eat those herself but most other food you have to hold for her to eat. I don’t know if this is normal or if she’s just peculiar!
This evening when it was getting dark I went outside as usual to put the hedgehog food out & I could hear Dickie huffing & moving about. She was half out of her house as the door wasn’t shut & was clearly annoyed about something. It turned out a baby hedhehog had gone into her house & was moving all the straw about making itself at home. Dickie was very put out & didn’t want to go back in.
We got another box sorted out for the little hog to go into & put Dickie back but she continued to move around scratching the base. I shut the door but I won’t be surprised to find that she’s pushed it open & come out.
I’m not sure the little hog should be without its mum. It’s very small fits in the palm of my hand & I have small hands! It has its spines & has the curl reflex so maybe it’s just left the nest. It has settled in the box & can get out if it wants to. I’ve left food & water in the box but it will probably tip them over as there’s not a lot of room. Will see if it’s still there in the morning & decide what to do about it. Both working tomorrow so will be late afternoon before it can be taken anywhere if needs be.
I hope Dickie settles, I’ve never seen her so upset about something.

Talking of NE I saw something tonight on tv advertising a new programme to do with him & his wife in New Zealand. I will always think of what you told us so I definately won’t be watching it.
