Yeah it is SO hot here, even I was dying out there and I was drinking coconut water and kombucha. I hosed him down with some cooler water when he was in the sun and seemed really hot so maybe you're right and it's just the weather that's making him want to be inside his home... It's 104 here. Hopefully tomorrow is better :(

What is that?

At those temps, I'd be going to my shelter too. Only 93 here and I am vegging out instead of doing much work.

coconut water is really great for hydration and has a lot of natural electrolytes, I drink it in really warm weather or if I'm dehydrated. Kombucha info can be found here: http://www.synergydrinks.com/classic/home.aspx ... Both are amazing on days like today!

Yeah, you guys are probably right. He was probably just really hot, especially since he had ~2hour bath in the heat!

Isn't Kombucha a mushroom?

Sorta, it's a "Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast". It looks like a mushroom though. The tea is amazing, sort of an acquired taste but SO GOOD and makes me feel really good mentally and physically when I drink it.

Hi Torie Mom,
I just read your about your guy's impaction and giving him mineral oil. I too have a tortoise with an impaction. He has been very slowly passing it, but recently I think he might be in pain from it. I have taken him to the vet and have been following his suggestions, but I think I'm going to add the mineral oil to my routine. How often and for how long did you give it to him?

I am sorry, I just read the post above about the renal failure. Lou had a pretty dim diagnosis at first also. I went to 2 vets because I didn't like the first vet's answer. I had an xray done and you could see all the stones in his system, it looked and was very dismal, I cried and cried. They said he needed surgery asap, I went to another vet and she said it didn't look good either. I took YVONNE's advice and started with the mineral oil. A few weeks later, back for another check up and the vet couldn't believe it. All the stones were gone and he had gained 2 pounds! Lou's urates are perfectly normal now!! We had a whole lotta ugly for a long time. Now, he is the master of his domain and KING of the back yard.

Sounds like your vet is great, however, in fun and very respectfully, am going to disagree with your vet just a little! :D When Lou passed his biggest stone it was covered in mineral oil. Full on covered. I swear, it was because I was putting it on his tongue and in his food. That stone slid right on out and Lou didn't make a peep. The first stone he passed, he made this sound that scared the crap out of me, it was just aweful!!! I'm sure much worse for him! This is just my experience and it worked for me. I swear by it, I think it saved my tortie from a surgery that he may not have survived.

Drinking and gas are both great, sooooooo glad to hear it!! I really hope he has a "big" event soon!

Awww thanks so much for that story, it's very inspiring. I'm definitely going to continue with the mineral oil. I wish I could get some in from the back but Herman won't let anyone near his tail area-- every time the vet tried to insert an enema or anything he'd completely tighten. Yesterday when I gave him the mineral oil I put it in a syringe (with no needle) and put it in his mouth. How much do you give? I wasn't sure so I was a little conservative as I didn't want him to choke.

Lindsey, I am so proud of you! You are doing an awesome job, which no doubt with a 100 lb pound dude is no small feat. You have taken everyone's suggestions to heart. I know it's sad and frustrating but your are doing the best you can and he is lucky to have you as his tortie Mom!!! Not to mention sitting with him all day in 100F + weather!! Be proud in knowing that you are giving him 500% effort, I applaud you! Hang in there!! We are here for you and Herman!!! I look forward to seeing your updates later today!! {{{{HUGS}}}}}} Mary Anne {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}

I've been following the thread, waiting for the big poopy day. Hope all goes well with you and Herman. Sounds like you are doing a great job and showering him with TLC.

Thanks so much...

While there hasn't been any poop yet today the good news is is that Herman did in fact come out of his home all on his own this morning. I gave him a bath but he really didn't seem to enjoy it so I let him out and will try a little later. It's supposed to get up to 110 degrees today so I'm hoping he'll drink a bunch!

He's definitely drinking in that video...GREAT! Way too early to give up hope! On a similar note...Aladar has shut down, as well! He's still active but hasn't passed any poop for almost a week now...at least nothing substantial!

Good deal about his coming out this am on his own.:) Thankfully we are going to be a bit cool today, only mid 80s. Do not envy your heat today. :(

Well poop! Tell him we already have a tortoise using this excuse to worry his owner. Aladar just has to find something else! :p

Seriously, I am sorry to hear that. Hope soon he gives you a lot of mess to be cleaning up. :D
