Want to improve my tortoise's indoor pen - because I live in england and because of personal circumstances I can only have him outdoors in really fine weather - but I came across a tortoise website which said they need an enormous space and lots of variety to stave off boredom.

I want to do the best for my boy - are there any recommendations for best design for tortoise table

And I keep seeing that coconut coir is best substrate, would people agree?

The larger the better (something that allows browsing/exercising) along with some obstacles to hide in/under (plant canopy is fun for them to hide and spring out from behind when they see you coming...lol)...some folks place a bright colored (not small enough to swallow) ball that they can ram/push and such around in the enclosure...

Also, I do like coco coir or the finely processed down peat moss....:D

The bigger the better... my indoor tort table for my Russians is 2m x 1m, and I know a lot of folks have an even bigger table, but this works for us during the cold months. The walls are about 45cm high, so the torts have 13+ cm of substrate to dig in. I use coconut coir mixed 1:1 by dry weight with play sand for substrate. The 'hot' area is covered in flat rocks. I rotate shallow planters with weeds planted in them, I put small logs (bake them first to make sure no bugs etc), rocks, etc. - A golf ball is fun for them, too - one of my torts knocks it around, the other ignores it.
