Good evening everyone!

I took the opportunity to use the basking table again. There are two tables and in the picture below you can only see one of them. Yesterday the weather was miserable but today I went out twice and I had a good time. I am very tired because also had a drowning session. Zola did you get out today? Seymour and PeeWee how are your new Box turtle friends? Edward how old are you and please could we see a photo. Sapphire are you outside yet? Dickie and Sherman how are you two? Have you stepped on Pete's foot again Sherman?

Goodnight everyone

Dear Natrah - we are all quite excited today - for several days we have seen swallows in and out of our carport occasionally - but today, we saw the evidence - droppings on the bonnet of our car ! Last year we had a swallows nest in the same place (a little shelf up by the roof, above our car) and the nest broke - and my dad rescued the babies and put them in a safer place, and took lots of photos of them as they grew up.

Good evening again everyone!

Earlier I saw a fox running past the flat and just now I noticed a bat flying at the back of the flat

Dickie hasn’t done much as the weather has been unsettled & not all that warm. She likes to explore the shed when she gets the chance! She managed to get onto one of the two steps up to the back door. The only way she could have done that was to climb onto the frog house roof…I’ve seen her attempt this before. She likes a challenge. I don’t think she could get back down though as it was a bit of a drop for her.
Pete hasnt seen Sherman for a couple of weeks but he will be going there on Saturday. If he knows in advance he’s doing something in Sherman’s shed or garden he makes sure he wears his heavy boots!

Edward is actually a rescue from a shelter and we don't know his age. Plus, he was more than likely wild caught, so even though we had his papers, we probably wouldn't know his age, just the year he was caught. All the vet was able to tell the shelter is that he is mature, so over 15 years old. To be honest, he might be any age, but I don't think that he is on the older side, judging from his shell.

Dear Zola,

How old do you think they are? I imagine it will be a few weeks before they can fly. They must love your house. I saw a fox and a bat last night but this was after Jacky had gone to bed. I don't know if I'll see anything tonight because it's pretty miserable at the moment although Jacky spent quite a bit of time outside. I bet it was raining where Dickie and Sherman are.

I'm a bit concerned about Amanda and Ernie because they've been very quiet. I know Sapphire's okay because Cathie often posts on Cold Dark Room. I am pleased to hear from Edward. Zola have you heard anymore about the seven Aldabras (I would like to abandon their owner on Mount Everest or in the Poles!).

I hear that the injured are still in hospital receiving specialist care. Jacky had dandelions with enormous leaves for lunch!

Goodnight everyone

Dear Natrah - as I said, the photos are from last year, but we are pretty sure that the adults flying into our carport must be ones from last year's brood. I can't rememember exactly how old they were when Richard rescued them, but we were amazed at how quickly they grew up in the big flowerpot where he put what was left of their damaged nest. I love to think they have carried the memory of our scruffy carport in their brains to find their way back to us ! Especially since there were awful weather conditions and a shortage of insects for food , both there and back here again.
I rescued a young swallow once, several years ago - I was waiting outside a shop in Holsworthy, our nearest town, when a young swallow came flying close to me, and into the shop window - it fell on to the ground, stunned, and I saw there were people around with dogs, so I picked it up and held it in my warm hand - carried it home, and didn't put it down for a second for several hours. Richard was away, so I rang a friend who knows a lot about birds, and he said I should just wait until it came round, and then go outside and throw it up on the air, to start it flying again. I could tell it was alive - I could feel its little heart beating - I watched it eventually flutter its eyes and begin to move. so I carried it out in our garden, wished it luck, and threw it up in the air - and off it went ! I was so happy !
I gather that the man who owned the Aldabra tortoises hadn't checked on them over the Christmas period, and their heating had broken down. He also had a lot of other tortoises, and they were all taken away, and he is banned from having any for 10 years, and was fined and has to do unpaid community work.

Dear Angie,

I'm sorry I misread your post! I think it's amazing that you rescued that swallow and they clearly know who to go to! Thinking of those poor Aldabras when Jacky was doing fridge hibernation I opened the door for thirty seconds each day as recommended but I also touched her foot occasionally because I just wanted to make sure she was okay. Yes he should have checked on those poor tortoises.

Goodnight Angie

Should be banned for life 😡😥
Yes Natrah the weather has been rotten today although Dickie ventured out about 12pm but only ate some dandelions then sheltered under a bush. She went back in later. Sometimes she goes in her box & comes out again but not today

Goodnight all

I am ashamed to have to say the Aldabra tortoise situation happened in Devon, the county where I live. Ten smallish Aldabra tortoises were found dead in woodland belonging to the National Trust - land which people can visit freely. This was over the Christmas New Year period. The polce managed to track the owner down - he had been so busy celebrating that he hadn't checked their situation - found them all dead, because their heating system had failed - panicked , put them in his car and dumped them in the forest. He also had 40 baby tortoises and older ones of various kinds - they were all confiscated and he was banned from keeping any for 10 years. Vets examined some of the dead Aldabras, and found evidence of very poor care and metabolic problems. Horrible, isn't it! Yet he told the police they were his pride and joy !
