She came out late morning today had a warm bath & sat in the sun. Didn’t want to eat anything except a small piece of cherry then had a wander. Had to get her back out of her box again later when it warmed up & she ate a bit more with Pete holding the food to her mouth. It’s this that bothers me, why she doesn’t make the effort to eat herself. Anyway think the weather’s going to warm up a bit so that might help.
Angie do you think the swallows have already flown to Africa? Did read they usually go in September so maybe that’s another sign of a change in the seasonal pattern, perhaps the same thing affecting Dickie & some other outside torts at the moment.
I hadn't thought about that before, but it could be the case. When Richard was out with Zola this afternoon, a lady asked him if he had any idea why her 20 year old tortoise seemed to have gone off her food - she had taken her to the vet, but nothing seemed wrong. She lives in Yorkshire. He said it seemed to be happening with quite a few tortoises, but as Zola doesn't hibernate, we haven't seen a difference in his behaviour. It would be reassuring if it was a general pattern, wouldn't it?

Yes thanks Angie we have heard of a few who are described as ‘confused’!

Good evening everyone!

Sorry this is late. That's a lovely photo Zola but I think those swallows will be back next year. Sue I don't think you have anything to worry about because another friend has admitted that her tortoises are slowing down and eating less. I am going to make an appointment at the vets for another checkup for Jacky because she is trying to resist eating most of the time but I am keeping her weight up because last time the vet said her weight was lower than last year. Once I am satisfied that Jacky's weight is okay I will start to withdraw her food once it gets colder.

Goodnight everyone

Natrah, Jacky and Angel Daisy

PS: Good luck tomorrow Dickie.

PPS: Jacky says don't forget to shove the vet or make a mess and she also says to try some bathroom scales!

Hello Natrah -we have had some very unpleasant weather this week -heavy rain at times, and my mum had to put the central heating on because it was really cold. My dad has been doing a lot of garden things - mostly involving brambles which have scratched him very viciously. Do you know of any really strong gloves which would protect him - they say "thorn resistant', but that isn't enough ?
It was sunny this afternoon, so we went to look at Tamar Lake, which is very close - no time to go to the breakwater. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
Love to you,Jacky and Angel Daisy, and to all my forum friends from Zola xxxxxxxxxx

Good evening everyone!

Sue I was wondering how Dickie got on at the vets and whether it is hibernation? Hope Dickie's okay. Zola we've had some sunny days here and it was quite warm today. Jacky was very active after her soak (crawling everywhere and eating) however this evening seems to be quite a bit colder so I don't how she'll be tomorrow. I'm considering another checkup at the vets within the next couple of weeks. The vet said that her next appointment is October but she could be well into hibernation by then!

I remember my gloves which I bought from Wilko's is good enough for the thistles although I still have to be careful. However dad had a pair of very stout gloves which he may have bought from Texas Homecare. I hope it is warmer tomorrow and I hope your mum's okay.

Sue how is Sherman these days? Is Pete going to do some work in his enclosure? I'm sure Sherman would love that? Edward I hope you and your servant are okay.

Goodnight everyone

Hello Natrah sorry had a busy evening!
Dickies appt was at 4pm so Pete had to leave home about 2.30pm which meant I couldn’t go with him as I was still at my job. Anyway the vet was a very knowledgable middle aged man & he scanned her abdomen as the X-ray done by the vet here only showed her lungs & the rest was fuzzy. He didn’t charge for this as he said the cost was part of what we had already paid.
Thankfully Dickie appears healthy with ‘active ovaries’ which because she could still produce eggs means she could become eggbound in the future. It has happened twice before but the last time was 25 years ago so hopefully it won’t. He is happy with her weight & there is no sign of any respiratory issues. Her mouth is ok too. He said to see how things go but it is likely she is displaying pre hibernation behaviour a little early due to the weather. He didn’t comment on the fact the food has to be presented to her & held to entice eating but id say it’s likely part of the same behaviour.
He did say that sometimes the ovaries can grow really large & then become a problem which requires an operation to remove them. I assume hers are normal size.
He asked about her brumation in the past & of course this time for Dickie she is living here so it will be different for her, along with a less sunny garden which I have commented on in a past post. This is likely to be affecting her too. He says when hibernating she should really have a constant temperature of 5 degrees. This isn’t something we can control unless we use the fridge method like you do but she has always been ok up to now so we’ll see how things go when we get to that time. So all in all reassuring.
Dickie of course was not impressed with the long journey & had been scrabbling about in the pet carrier on the way there also leaving protest presents on the way. She was quieter coming back almost like she knew she was going back home. George is the same when he goes to the vet but he makes more of a mess & noise!
Pete hasn’t seen Sherman & they haven’t reported any more damage to his shed! Once he’s indoors more though I’m sure he will 😅

Goodnight all

Thank you for asking Natrah,

We are well, but I have been very busy with all the start of the school year stuff.Today when I placed Edward in his soaking tub, he ran straight to the nearest wall and tried to get out the whole time...

Hello Natrah - I managed to get a lovely walk on the breakwater today - it was fairly warm, and the tide was up, so the water was splashing about quite close to me - that was quite exciting, but don't worry, my dad will see that I am quite safe and don't fall in ! We might go to get some radicchio tomorrow, as the weather forecast is quite good, but I'm not sure yet. It is always a lovely drive if the sun is out - except when there are lots of holiday people around, as some of the roads are very narrow and twisty. My mum will be speaking on the phone next week to the headache clinic nurse, to discuss her pills - so far she really hasn't noticed much improvement -if any- just that the worst pain is in a slightly different part of her head.
I hope you and Jacky are well, and that you have recovered from all your birthday celebrations.
Goodnight to you both, and love to all my forum friends too from Zola xxxxxxxxx

Good evening everyone,

Sorry this is late and short. Sue I was pleased to hear about Dickie and I was certain it was hibernation and I shall be putting a checkup for Jacky tomorrow. Edward when I soaked Jacky yesterday she did the same as you and tried to escape. Zola I hope you got your walk.

Sadly I woke up to sad news from Malaysia in that my second cousin passed away from complications to diabetes type 2. He developed this in his thirties (he passed away in his late fifties) like his mum and great uncle (dad) but it sounds like he didn't control it quite so well. I am thinking of my relatives but particularly my cousin who is bedbound and was his mother.

Goodnight everyone

Sorry Angie and Zola,

I've only just seen this and I have no idea how I missed it. I shall be thinking about your mum and I that she feels better with an appointment at the headache clinic. I shall be making Jacky's next appointment with the vets and preparing to take Jacky to an Essex Tortoise Group meeting in South Ockendon. We shall be going by train and Jacky will be in the small pet carrier.

Goodnight

Natrah
