Hi everyone. I already have a redfoot about a year old. My wife went to petco today amd they had a redfoot on sale for $40. My question is can i put them together in same habitat. The one she got might be a little over 2.

I wouldn't suggest it, pairs are never good not to mention the new one should be quarantined for several months before you even introduce them to each other.

@stravo - AFTER at least 4 months quarantine.. you might put them together.. depending on size comparison. They are very gregarious .. which means they do great together.. given enough space.

YES you need to set-up another completely separate enclosure for the new one to be quarantined in - we never know what has been in that space along with the new one. Petco most likely has had him for awhile is why he was discounted him.. they needed the space to put something else in. You think they will totally tear down that tank and sterilize it before putting something else in it?

They need to be kept entirely separately in quarantine for at least 6 months in my opinion. This is to ensure that neither makes the other sick.

After that, they might get on together and they might not. If they're different sizes, I'd keep them apart. Redfoots are among the more tolerant species, but there are still no guarantees that they will cohabit successfully. A herd of 3 or more tortoises of a similar size is more likely to be successful in a very large enclosure with plenty of sight barriers.

Don't forget that, if you have two tortoises in an enclosure, then they need double the floor area. Putting two in an enclosure previously occupied by one is a recipe for disaster.

After 10+ years of keeping and breeding redfoot tortoises - given the proper space and time - I've yet to have any not get along - SPACE being the most important factor.

After quarantine I introduced 1.2 ADULTS into a pen with 1.2 ADULTS .. wondering if the males would fight - they got nose-to-nose.. did a little head-bobbing and then proceeded to chase the others' girlfriends. Wasn't long after all 6 were sleeping in a 4' x 4' hide-box...

Thanks all. I alreafybhad another enclosure to keep quarantined. I have so many other animals im used to it. Just recently stepped into tortoise world. I have a 200 gallon reef tank. The whole quarantine thing im used to. But there is a noticeable size difference between the 2. We got a red foot due to their cool temperment.

With that size difference they definitely need to be kept separately. :)

@stravo .. I'm puzzled by this - a yearling should be 3.5" - 4" .. and a two year old maybe 5+" SCL - I'm not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings here.. but since we have nothing [ ruler / some know object ] to compare with I can't really tell how big the smaller one is now -- the point being.. regardless in 6 months or so after quarantine it won't matter how small the smaller one is now.. they will be O.K. together then.

Actually right now I have an 8" young female together with three 4" youngsters.. they are like little bull-dozers and aren't fazed by her...

We agree a group of 3 or more is fine, are you saying a pair will be ok together?

I obviously haven't kept all I've hatched as keepers @cmac3 - and seldom if ever only 2.. but once they are in the 4" range and no longer are "pliable" for the lack of better terms - in other words once they are solid to the touch and actually have some weight to them .. then I consider them to be youngsters and ready to be kept with the rest of the herd.

I have a pair that get along great. They're much closer in size, though.

I've encountered trampling of much smaller tortoises and even larger tortoises laying on top of the smaller ones.
I'm not sure how much if it was just their clumsy nature.
