Kiddie pool is a good idea. I'll get one. I know they like water
They seem to enjoy it once I put food in. Before they realize there is food they want to get out and try to climb the sides. After they realize food is there, they eat some (or all) then just casually wander/swim around drinking and soaking. You will have to monitor because sometimes they will actually be able to climb over the side, other times they might accidentally flip. So I put them in for an hour and let them have fun but I watch from a distance. Also, I keep it in the sun so the water doesn't get to cold, but I do monitor the temp to make sure it doesn't get too hot, also.

We sunk a cement mixing pan into the turtle pen. The babies stick to the old pond under the mass of plants in the old pen, but the 2 bigger ones hang out in the new pond. Clementine will soak in there for hours at night when the mood strikes.
Not sure if their temp enclosure would be large enough for even the small mixing pan (which is what I think we have). We did put in some hard plastic mesh on either end to make it easier to get out.

Lovely area! I only suggest checking the size of the stones to make sure they can't swallow any.

Boxys settled in well. I do wish I had a larger area. Even just for 2. Right now I have 60 sq' for them. Lots of plants and shade. Good soil to dig in.
If they become permeant residents I'll make a bigger one with a little pond.

After closer examination and comparison to others , I'm fairly certain they are both female. Almost wish I had a male to put in with them just to have some babies to raise. Hahaha

They find the feeding tile every morning and devour whatever I put out there. Today it was some scrambled egg , butternut squash , a few pieces of damp Mazuri and kale.
I've tossed a few snails in there when I find them
Don't know if they ever get the snales though.

Got a kiddie pool at Family Dollar for $8.

This weekend I'll set it up as a water habitat to put them in for a swim and exploring sometimes.

It's rainy season now so their enclosure is always damp. ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1440779830.360754.jpgstill I find them sitting in their water often. They certainly are not sedintary. Active little buggers.

I'm glad to hear. Sounds like they are greatly enjoying themselves under your care.
I remember a forum member needing to rehome a male boxie because she had to take in a boxie from a poor situation and it turned out the new one was a male that she added to her lone female, then removed. I think I remember her saying she didn't have the room for both? So she was looking for a new home for him. I'll look to see if I can find that thread.

Guess I missed that thread.
I think I read there are 5 species of American box turtle? These are defiantly florida Boxies , taken from wild when babies. Does the male have to be a florida Boxie?

Is the Gulf Cost Boxie the same ?

Box turtles are new to me now. Just fascinating creatures.

Gulf coast is much bigger than Florida. I would suggest keeping to a Florida male.
The thread was about easterns, I forgot that.

After she ate the night crawler. She stayed there for awhile looking up like another might just fall out of the sky. Made me laugh.
That's what my boxies do when I have them in the kiddy pool and I'm feeding them with the feeding tongs. They stare up at me like "yo, still hungry! Come on, crazy giant thing! FEED ME!" Haha. The one male I have named Saki will charge from across the kiddy pool when he sees me with tongs.

These little gals go to their feeding tile first light and wait for me to drop food.
They both got a night crawler. But waiting for the other treats now. So funny how they learned this in just a few days.

I wouldn't mix the species. If I'm remembering correctly, the Florida box turtle, Terrapene carolina bauri's status is 'threatened'. Also, both the ornata and the bauri are pretty aggressive.
