Good evening everyone!

Sue I'm glad the party went well. I forgot all about it but it sounds like one to remember. Hopefully you can go on the steam train next year. I just want to tell you about the modern version of the Flying Scotsman. Several years ago when I was on my way to stay with my friend in Edinburgh I was boarding the train at St Pancras. I was just looking for a seat when the gentleman in front of me, who had been helping his friends and relatives with their luggage said: "I better get off now".

At that point there was a jolt 🤣 and he said: "Oh my god it's moving!"🤣 When I found my seat the driver came through on the radio and said: "We're going to stop at the next station because there are people on the train who shouldn't be there!"

Goodnight everyone

Hello Natrah - we are just beginning to recover from over 2 days and nights of loss of electricity - I will write about it in more detail tomorrow, but this is just to say it was absolutely horrible - and, of course, our main priority was keeping Zola warm and happy. He has had a proper stroke by the fire tonight, and will soon be watching tv on my lap -he has hardly eaten anything yet, but he seems all right. Richard and I are going to be able to have a proper sleep tonight - warm, and no more phone calls in the middle of the night from the electricity people!
I hope you didn't have any problems yourself.

Dear Angie,

I guessed you were without power but I'm glad you're okay. Please read the post above as it may make you laugh. I've been okay although Darragh had the last laugh this afternoon! I think may have gone into hibernation mode so make sure he stays and under a lamp and he should start eating again. I just want to say that after I told my friend about the gentleman on the train she told me about dad.

I met my whilst studying at Nene College, Northampton for a year (Sue @MoggyMad) anyway she was boarding the train to Peterborough before changing for Northampton. Her dad helped her with the luggage whilst her mum was on the platform and yes @Chefdenoel10, @The_Four_Toed_Edward and @MoggyMad you guessed the rest🤣. All I can say is that my friends dad was deposited at Dunbar three stops from Berwick Upon Tweed which is at the borders.

Goodnight everyone and keep warm Zola

I just want to say that I should think my friend's mother must have been freaking out when she didn't realise that she would be saying goodbye to her husband as well as her daughter!

Dear Natrah -we were both very tired after two cold nights mostly awake worrying about the power cuts, and then the electrician came in the afternoon today,to replace our meter, which took quite a while - and then we discovered that several lights were flickering - so one more thing to worry about ! We hope there isn't anything seriously wrong with our wiring. Zola is fine - he is more or less back in his usual routine now, with his lights and heating on - he ate quite a lot today. There has been quite a lot of relatively minor damage around here from the storm - fences down, trees across the road, etc - we just had a bit of our gutter down, and Richard managed to fix it back fairly well - nothing major, anyway.
Lots of love to you,Sleeping Beauty, and Angel Daisy, and to all our forum friends from Angie xxxxxxxxxx

Being towards the middle of the country we escaped the worst of the recent wind & rain. Our hanging plant went over the fence to next door & another neighbours hanging decoration was outside our house but as far as we know our roof & guttering are ok. One side of the roof we cannot see but we asked the neighbour to let us know if anything looks amiss.
The animal sanctuary have had a couple of very sick tortoises handed in. They are small & too weak to eat so are currently with a specialised vet for intensive care. Please keep your fingers crossed they pull through 🤞🙏🏻

Good evening everyone!

Zola I'm your parents are okay and that you've but it must have been a worry for them. Are they warm enough now? I have been thinking did your neighbours lose power during the storm and if so when it went back on was there any flickering. Have your parents heard anymore from the electrician? I remember when we had mini-power cuts and flickering lights years ago and an electrician replaced the entire box also I wonder if there is a connection with you all having smart meters installed.

Sue I'm praying for those little tortoises do they know what's wrong with them? Also is Sherman in the shed? Chef and Edward how are you all and is the weather okay? Today was pretty miserable and I was expecting sunshine. I may not be able to post so much at the weekend because I could be giving presents to friends and also I have Carol Concert on Sunday. I have been posting on Cold Dark Room about the time when a lady's phone went off during the two minute silence at the end of the concert one year and it played "Buffalo Soldier"! I went up to the lady later and said "I like Bob Marley as well"!

Goodnight everyone

I don’t know the circumstances of the 2 tortoises but pictures of them show they fit on your hand & they both (girls) have pyramiding all over their shells. Pete was there today & asked after them, one is showing some signs of improvement but the other is still very unwell. At least they are getting the care they need right now from the tortoise vet. Sounds like they were acquired by someone who hadn’t cared for them correctly or were abandoned.
Pete says Sherman is in his shed!

Chef and Edward how are you all and is the weather okay?
The weather is fairly mild compared to the usual and there is also less snow than usually. Today there will be a low of -8 and a high of -6. The days will get shorter here until the 21.12. when they will start to get longer, slowly but surely. Today the sun rises at 9.36 and sets at 14.47. Thankfully the snow makes it feel like there is more light than there actually is.

Good morning Edward,

We've had no snow in Essex UK either but the weather's been miserable this week. Our Winter Solstice is on the 21st December and then the days will get longer. Do you get any daylight in Finland over winter because I've heard that you get hardly any? Here it is quite dark at 7.00 am and gets dark again from 3.30 pm onwards.

Hello Natrah - I hope all is well with you. We are still getting over the effects of the power cut, and the chaos caused by that and the new electricity meter being installed - then yesterday we both went to the dentist for our 6 monthly check-up - I was ok - she even praised the condition of my teeth - but Richard has had a bad toothache for some time, and she decided the tooth needed to come out straight away ! it was very large, and caused a lot of bleeding - and now he has had to set off early to take the car for its service - and hang about until it is finished. We would have postponed it for a bit, but a little light keeps coming up saying "electrical fault-workshop" - so , although it isn't causing any problem,we thought we had better get it sorted out before it got worse.
Poor Richard is still feeling quite a bit of pain - and a fair bit of bleeding too, but there's nothing much he can do about it. The dentist (who we know well, and trust) had to give him a lot of injections before she was able to deal with the tooth -Richard said that when she was pulling it out, it was the worst pain he had ever experienced in his life - even worse than when he had his head smashed in by some thugs when he was walking on Hampstead Heath in the dark - many years ago, but he stll has the scar and the dent in his skull ! He nearly died, then.Incidentally, this was what led to him and myself getting together, really!
Zola is settling down again - his routine was messed about for a while - he doesn't like that at all. As far as I know, there is nothing else disruptive likely to happen for a while now.

Dear Angie,

I remember you telling us about that attack and how you got together. I hope Richard feels better soon but I just want to remind that after having a tooth extracted Richard shouldn't take aspirin because it thins the blood but he may be able to take paracetamol.

Dreary day here. Hope your car's okay.

We currently have about 4 cm of snow and more to come tomorrow.

Getting hardly any daylight applies a bit further north, above the arctic circle. As a kind of payback, the sun won't set there in the middle of summer, But I have never lived there so can't tell you what it is like.

I will try to illustrate the difference. The shortest day here where I live will be 4 hours and 54 minutes, with the sun raising at 9.40 and setting at 14.34. Meanwhile the longest day this year was 20 hours and 25 minutes on the 22.6. when the sun rose at 2.58 and didn't set until 23.24. Above the arctic circle, the longest day is over 24 hours and the sun won't set for days. Meanwhile during the shortest days of the year the sun won't rise for days.

I think this time lapse shows the amount of light well even though it is from Norway, not Finland:

Thanks for your reminder about the aspirin, Natrah - we both have soluble aspirin regularly on prescription , and we know theoretically about it, but he was just about to have some, out of habit, with his supper, when I told him not to !
He did manage to eat some supper today, anyway, and is feeling a lot better now,but it is going to be a few days before his jaw is back to normal. The dentist had to give him nine injections ! At least our car got fixed ! We are both feeling exhausted, but at least tomorrow should be easier.
Zola has been very sweet and loving - it's almost as if he senses things are difficult for us at present. We are trying to get his proper routine back now - he has had a long stroke every evening, and I think he finds that reassuring.
Lots of love to you, Jacky, Angel Daisy, and all our tortoise friends

@zolasmum i hope Richard is ok. You’ve both had a rotten old time of it lately. Hoping normality will return soon 🤞
Thanks - yes, we are all ok now, including Zola, but things have been very stressful in lots of ways, and we are both very tired.I'm hoping there won't be any major dramas next week.I haven't really thought about Christmas much yet.

A couple I know were telling me recently about a holiday they had in Norway years ago during the summer & they said how difficult it was to sleep when it stayed light all night. Alcohol helped 😉

Good evening everyone!

I wonder whether the wildlife ever sleeps in places where it is light all the time in summer. I've seen programmes about penguins being noisy all the time and keeping wildlife photographers awake. Do you still have snow Edward and I hope Chef, Sally, Squirt and GGGGGAAAARRRYYYY are okay.

Zola how are your parents today? I think your dad should gargle warm salted water to help keep his tooth cavity warm. Also how is your electricity now? I have my Carol Concert tomorrow but I have been putting up decorations today.

Goodnight everyone
