It’s been very hot here too so I stayed indoors mostly & defrosted the freezer which was completely frozen up. The temperature helped speed up the defrosting process!
Dickie was very active today investigating all corners of the garden. She knocked over a garden cat ornament which was under my buddleia then climbed over it precariously looking like she was trying to climb up the trunk of the buddleia! Before rescuing her I went indoors to get my iPad to take a photo to impress Jacky but when I got back she had managed to get over it & was looking very pleased with herself 😁
Despite this activity she still wasn’t interested in eating & after walking up the side of the garden under all the plants she headed back to her house. I tried her with some food but she just walked past it. Pete got her back out a little later & managed to get her to eat some runner bean leaves & lettuce.
He’s got the knack & the patience!

Good evening everyone!

It's been very hot here and Natrah says that my thermostat read 32.8 degrees Celsius at 9.45 am! Anyway Edward I hope your mum is okay could it be a hernia. Zola I have been reading about your walks and I'm you've made another tortoise friend. Natrah's hoping that I can meet some children at the vets again.

Anyway this is what happened this morning both of us enjoyed breakfast in this weather and then Natrah went to meet her friends for coffee. Whilst she was out I got to work in the bathroom 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I went towards my friend the bathroom scales before turning and charging straight at the useless plant food bottle to go and clean behind the toilet with the toilet brush. I then went into reverse in order to see my friend the mop but this bucket was in the way so I gave it a good shove. I tried to make it back to the water tray before Natrah arrived home but this involved charging through the food bowl. Sapphire @Cathie G I hope you're reading this.

Goodnight everyone

Jacky, Angel Daisy and Natrah

Good evening tortoises,

Are any of you micro-chipped? I am a bit concerned about Jacky having any sort of procedure at her. She is in bed now but she hopes Edward's Servant is okay. I was anaemic as a child and put on iron tablets. Jacky was also pleased that my grade 5 Music Theory pupil passed her exam.

Goodnight everyone

Dear Natrah -does Jacky really need to be microchipped at her age? Zola isn't, and I don't think we will get it done, unless his circumstances change a great deal. He is pretty much always with us,and doesn't have much chance of being stolen or getting lost. Do you have a special reason for considering it with Jacky ?
You really must be a very good teacher - I think I may have told you about my piano teacher when I was a child - she gave lessons in her house, and kept her former dog (now dead and stuffed) beside the piano !!!
I'm afraid I wasn't a very good pupil, though I liked playing little tunes I made up to myself.
Love to you and Jacky, Angel Daisy, and all our forum friends from Angie and Zola xxxxxxxxx

Thankyou Angie.

The Essex Tortoise Group on Facebook has had several tortoises going missing and several turning up in different places so the administrators said "get your tortoises micro-chipped"! I just thought well Jacky's managed 90 years without one and Daisy managed 80 years. When I have her in the garden I constantly check on her and where we lived before I constantly checked the garden. In my grandmother's house Daisy escaped once but the neighbour was well aware of who she belonged to.

They also had someone talking about two tortoises together some time ago and the general consensus was they should be kept separately. Of course I said that Jacky and Daisy had been together for seventy-two years and they were both female. I also think Jacky misses Daisy because she enjoyed staying with my friend but she seemed less active than last time. I think this was because of the sudden change in temperature but also she missed me and because of remembering Daisy. Tortoises have good memories and I also remember them supporting each other.

Goodnight

Natrah

PS: You would have been an excellent Pianist!

I don't know whether Edward is micro chipped. He might have been sometime along the process of being wild caught. If I got him microchipped I worry that no one would look for one if he was found.

Yes that’s a good point. We had our rabbits chipped which was unusual to do at the time & I wondered whether anyone would check. I have mentioned chipping Dickie to Pete as she is an outside tortoise. He didn’t seem keen. I wonder where the chip would go? Would need to be done with pain relief as needle quite big 😟

Apparently the pain is very short term. Check out Marks post #6 in this thread:

Good evening everyone!

I hope you're all cooling down I'm going to jump in the bath in a minute. Today's not an easy day for as I remember mum but I bought some lovely flowers for her. I've been arranging a birthday get together with my friends on Monday and a joint birthday get together with another friend on Tuesday. Jacky will also be joining in with strawberries.

I don't think it's a good idea for her to get a microchip at her age with arthritis in her left leg and an enlarged bladder which the vet found when she was hospitalised in 2023. Also as Edward's Servant says if they are stolen is a thief really going to look for a microchip.

I expect Zola went out today and I suppose I need my head examined because I went to my usual theatre cafe and I was the only one to sit outside!

Goodnight everyone

Richard took some photos of Zola's travelling box today - you can see he has lots of room - when we got it made he was still very small, and we didn't know how much he would grow -he is quite contented in it, as he knows he will be going somewhere good, and he feels safe. I don't think he has ever tried to get out.
It has been pretty warm today, and we all went to Roadford Lake in the morning after taking a car-full of cardboard to the tip - in the afternoon Zola and his dad had their walk on the breakwater as usual, of course.

Good evening everyone!

That wicker box looks very snug. Jacky has two pet carriers one which she uses to sleep in and one for going out. It sounds like you had a lovely day.

It's very hot here. Is it still hot in Finland Edward? Anyway I'm pleased to say that I saw my friendly neighbourhood bat flying around for the first time this year. He did several circles before flying off. Sue how is Dickie? Jacky is starting to forget about hibernation and she is eating more.

Goodnight everyone

Yesterday she ate quite a lot but today she hasn’t eaten that much. She doesn’t stay out for long. We have loads of wasps in the garden probably after the apples, we’ve had a bumper crop this year, so I hope she doesn’t get stung. She’s not been eating much of her cherries lately.
Think she’s ok though like Jacky still quite active.
Been quite hot today but it’s a lot cooler tonight. Still no rain for us though.

Good evening everyone!

I don't understand because I haven't been eating but Natrah says I have she must be looking at me through the window. She also says that the dandelion in my mouth means that I have been munching! It seems to be cooler here today and a bit cloudy so I have spent some time sleeping.

Goodnight everyone

Jacky, Angel Daisy and Natrah

PS: It is meant to be even cooler on Thursday and I have been told that I can have a lie in especially after the person that pokes tortoises on Wednesday!

Good evening everyone!

It's been a lovely day today with Jacky eating strawberries but it's also been eventful. I decided to go Two Tree Island where I took the photos below. I saw several butterflies including Red Admirals, Meadow Browns and Whites and I also saw Little Egrets, a Wren near the cafe door, Goldfinches and a Kestrel. I took several photos towards Leigh but one was taken later in the afternoon and showed. It turned out that the football training ground next to my old flat was on fire!!!!! I hope no one was hurt. Anyway I also saw an RAF Typhoon flying back from some commemoration event.

Edward's Servant I hope you're okay and enjoying your semester.

Goodnight everyone

Lovely photos but the ominous rise of smoke is a worry. Hope the fire was put out before it took hold.
We have a bat flying round the garden at dusk. It’s too quick to see what sort it is. I’ve had a bat roosting box on the house for years but I haven’t noticed any activity.
