Hmmm. I guess they do, don’t really know. Between Baltimore and Annapolis and Washington, there is enough noise on the 4th. Wow... York.. right up the road.

We are looking for a “good” retirement spot esp TAXES.. i don’t think CA fits the bill. Keep thosepox of birds coming in..
How about Arkansas or Tennessee? TN is where we planned to retire, but we ended up here. A long story...

Hey...I am a California Native....although we have our crazy politicians who think we think like they do ....NOT....I love California.....yes, taxes too high....crazy politicians everywhere you look and even when you are not looking....most of the California I personally know is very good....I do love going to Nevada...especially Laughlin...love the dry heat....there use to be a time where Southern Cali use to be super dry and hot....some days it still occurs....I would not ever move...but I do sometimes think I will spread a bit out to perhaps one day a small spot in Laughlin Nv....

I could not imagine living in a place that is covered in snow every year (although here in the high desert we have had our share of snow during weird weather)...I would absolutely choose to deal with heat and wind vs cold and snow....hands down.

Thank you! Good helpful advice!
I have a couple trees for shade in his enclosure. I planted some bushes, but they haven't come up. I'll see what comes up next year.
This was taken early in the spring...the trees are filled in and give lots of shade now.View attachment 243452

Have you tried Chinese Elm trees? They grow like crazy and once established are a beautiful hearty Desert Tree....I sometimes just lay the hose down in an area where I wish trees were at and before you know it a Chinese Elm pops up....water it and it is a beautiful area of shade....I have so many saplings that I have dug em up and given them to co workers....I have about 6 of them that I need to move to a new local so that they are not too close to the house....wonderful shade trees....for sure.

I agree with you. I said I like the weather here better than the humidity of summer and the cold of PA winters.
I also agree with you re' the politics...
But I am a woods, streams, and hills gal. I'm sorry, but the desert isn't my favorite landscape.
However, we've been here 9 years now, made a home here, have good friends and a good church. You're stuck with us! LOL!

You know, I was bred, born an hugely raised in Los Angeles Ca....I was born in the French Hospital in China Town....oh, about 5 hundred years ago :)))....give or take...I grew up running Griffith Park with my Uncles who caught / observed and then released Gopher / Rattler and every other type of reptile....spiders and other stuff that ran the hills....I have been to other parts of the US and enjoyed...but can not ever imagine "life" anywhere else..... I use to think that the Desert was so "boring" and then something happened...I suddenly saw the raw harsh beauty of the Desert years ago and while I go all over I am alway super happy to get back home here in the Desert....(with extended comfort to Nevada :)).....have you gone to Laughlin? Do you Casino for fun and River between?

Hey, I right now have at least 6 Chinese Elm (an about a bunch more if needed) that will be transplanted and need a new home...so if you want some I can supply some....keep in mind though, that once you introduce this tree species to your property....you will have no problem laying the hose down and "bam" some to transplant to provide a beautiful forest :)

What a nice offer! I looked them up and they are even tort safe to feed! I'd love to have 1 or 2. I don't have a huge yard, but could use more shade.

Hey guys. Thanks for some ideas and thoughts on retirement locations... taxes taxes taxes are a big reason why we are now looking to move from Maryland. Since we have our Sully to move along with us, we are looking and warm, humid areas, with grass :)

I just got a hibiscus in the mail. It looks great too. Here were the instructions that came with it.

“Hello! I’m your new Plant With a Purpose! I am almost ready to go to work for you but I’m tired from my long trip in the dark. I could use a drink of water, but don’t put me in too much light. I will burn! Start out with a bright indirect light source and gradually increase my light over a week or two. And please don’t forget to check my light requirements just in case I can’t handle full sun. I’ll be hungry soon, so please don’t forget to feed me something in the near future.”

Not sure about mealtime for it. I hope it likes tortoise poop.

Really nice looking plant! I got some cuttings from a fellow member, and they seem to be doing well. They are still inside til they are well rooted.
I can offer my plants dog poop, tortoise poop, used aquarium water, etc. So far they have not expressed a preference! LOL!

My husband said TX and FL don’t have state income tax. East TX is good for warm and humid.

Yep....and thats why we have been focusing on Florida. Good Sully weather, and grass and beach/water kayaking, coupled with no State income taxes on anything compared to our MD taxes of 7 %.

Yes, but how about sales, gas, and property taxes? And medical care? You will pay, one way or another! [emoji16]

.... all better than Md....property taxes here in our Prince George’s County, some of the highest. Same with sales tax, about the same. Car insurance is high here, in general home owners is less.. but you’re right... Uncle finds your money.

And, the grass grows 24/7 x 365 for Mr. Sully
