It is more of a symptom than a diagnosis. I haven't read into it much, but it is easy to spot. It can be caused by a number of things and overall very little is known about it even though it is fairly common in captive management:

I read this whole paper thank you very much! Interesting to read.
It gives me things to check off of my list of what is happening…
I just don’t know what is going wrong.

How is Edward and his “four toes”? 😝

I am so very upset I just keep telling myself he is hibernating..
He is still wet when you look at him.
I bathed him in some kind of tea leaves
Sat him next to charcoal (detoxing)
And sat him next to some green powder stuff. All I received in that snail first aid kit.
Nothing is bringing him out !!!!
Now at 11pm I have sprayed him and the soil with water and put him under the soil so he can hibernate if that’s what he wants.
I just can’t let him go….
He is my best wee friend and my favorite of my three.. it was our little joke to the others..🤭
6years!! 😢😢😢😢
No!😤
He is hibernating. 😖

Thank you for giving me the info!
Keep giving me advice! 🙏❤️🙏

Good evening everyone!

Today it was only a little bit drier but I was able to do some washing and I was able to go to the usual place for lunch. Whilst I was out I heard some Great **** but also some Goldfinches.

I hope everyone else was okay and Zola got out to see the sea. Chef and Edward how is it where you two are. GGGGGAAAARRRYYYY I hope you're okay and that you start to get back to your usual self soon. Angie I hope you feel better and it's worth checking your ears.

I am going to busier for the rest of the and infact up to about May because a couple of my colleagues are leaving and I may take a few of their pupils. I have made it clear to the shop that I don't want to work on Saturday afternoons or Sundays otherwise I would never get a break. However I realise that a couple of my pupils will be doing GCSES and A levels in the summer I will have more free time on Thursdays but by then Jacky will be out of hibernation and spending more time outside. I am pleased to have more work but I need to rearrange my routine a bit. I also can't wait for half-term when I shall three concerts one at the Wigmore Hall in London and two locally given by friends.

Goodnight everyone

Oh thankyou Chef and I promise there will be photos. I know exactly how you feel about GGGGGAAAARRRYYYY and I hope he is hibernating. Edward do you what could cause retraction syndrome? Hope Angie's okay.

Dear Chef -I hope so much that Gary will recover from whatever his problem is, but at least you know you have given him a wonderful fairy-tale life - rescued from certain death, given a lovely palace to live in (including specially created snail beds from your mom) - given lovely things to eat, and all sorts of luxuries - and all the love and care and devotion he could possibly have. I'm sure he knows that in his own way, too, and will try to get better for you if he can.
Lots of love from Angie xxxxxxxxxxx

Tomorrow I shall be going to the hospital to get my postponed head injections - appointment at 2-20 pm (and if I can I shall try to ask about ear problems, like you suggested, Chef ) Then we shall get some nice fresh mealworms for our garden robin - actually,we think he might be courting, as he seems a bit more timid than usual. Baby robins are some of the cutest birds ever, and can be quite brave. I think I may have a photo of one from a few years back !

Dear Angie,

I shall be thinking of you tomorrow. It's been very cold and miserable here and tomorrow doesn't look much better. Baby Robins, I believe, have stripes and don't get their red breasts until later. Will Zola get to see the sea? I dreamt I was taking Jacky through the streets like I did three years ago when I left Daisy in charge of the keys🤣🤣🤣.

Goodnight everyone

Thank you so very very much Natrah.
You may be the only one who knows how I feel. Everyone I kinda try to talk to thinks I’m nuts! They keep telling me to eat him or to feed him to my torts! 😭😭😭😭😭
I don’t know if I’ll ever accept his departure
(If that’s what it is)
Today I gave my last ditch effort.
If this didn’t bring him out NOTHING will..
I brought home from work the membranes of an egg… and his ABSOLUTE FAVORITE….
A whole piece of wheat bread 🍞.
He always comes running for THAT one..

Now at 10pm I am very sad to say he didn’t come out for his bread.. 😞
I am not giving up hope… I just can’t! 😢
I have returned him to his cage and put him back in the soil and will wait for spring to come.. then… I’ll know for sure.
For now, I have to keep drying my tears.
I put one tear on his shell before I put him in the soil too. Silly I know…but he is just so innocent..and I can’t seem to let go.. 😩☹️

Good luck Angie and Chef I am praying for you and your mum should ignore those people 😡.

Hi Chef you mentioned in a post further back about a certain smell coming from you little friend. That sounded like an alarm bell to me & im wondering if he may have an infection. I don’t know anything about snail care but reading the link put up by Edwards mum I wonder if Aloe Vera wash could help? Don’t suppose there are medicines like antibiotics that could be squirted into the shell?
I too know the desperate feeling of wanting to try anything to help your pet so you are not alone in that. Ignore the thoughtless comments that have been said…..they are spoken from ignorance 😡

Dear Angie,

How are you? Did your appointment go ahead and did Zola come with you? Today was cold and wet but I enjoyed a nice lunch at Tomassi's of just Lasagne and Garlic bread. I stayed away from the desserts because the last thing I want is more statins.

Goodnight everyone

Dear Natrah - yes, I had my injections - 35 of them, all over my head and neck. It really hurts , of course - but the amazing thing is that my headache inside my head started to feel better within a few minutes - just the outside of my head feeling sore ! I am not feeling too good just now, as I find it very stressful - but Zola was watching me - his dad was holding him - so I try not to make a fuss. At least I shall perhaps be able to sleep better tonight - I hardly slept last night. Love to you all from Angie xxxxxxxxx
p.s. We did get more fresh mealworms for the robin in Tavistock, and when Richard was carrying them indoors the robin saw them, and rushed down to him .He ate 6 !

I'm so happy for you.!!! 🤗🙏 For the shots to heal quickly. That's adorable. I love our species of robins here in the US too and enjoy spending time with them. They seem to be just as sociable as the UK ones must be.

I know you do my sweetheart but I didn’t want to remind you of your horrible time.
I checked him again today and he seemed wet? Like maybe he IS hibernating?
No… it can’t be he is smelly. Not a lot but…
I put him back in his soil… it felt sooo great to have him in my hand again. It cheered me up immediately!!
I have been so cross with my work staff for the last two days but they have no idea why…
Oh, God…. this is terrible!!!!
I can’t even function without him!!!!
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
